Interlaw's partner firm in the Carolinas, USA, Robinson Bradshaw, has secured international arbitration awards in favor of a Chinese client in a case involving control of a joint venture.

A Chinese arbitration commission awarded the firm's client, a Chinese engine and power equipment manufacturer, more than $300,000 in attorney fees and arbitration fees against an ex-business partner after a falling out over allegations of embezzlement and fraud.

A federal district court confirmed the award and the ex-partner appealed the ruling, arguing that he did not agree to arbitration for disputes concerning the joint venture transaction. The appeals court affirmed the district court's decision awards in favor of the firm's client, ruling that the ex-partner showed no material dispute of fact about his agreement to arbitrate.

Robinson Bradshaw attorneys Douglas M. Jarrell and Stuart L. Pratt represented the client.
