Interlaw Firm Shipman & Goodwin Hires Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Attorney

Interlaw’s Hartford, Connecticut, USA partner firm Shipman & Goodwin LLP has further enhanced its environmental practice with the addition of Brendan Schain as a partner in the firm’s environmental practice group. Brendan joins the firm after serving as Legal Office Director for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).
At DEEP, Brendan led legal strategy across critical environmental programs and played a central role in shaping Connecticut’s new release-based cleanup regulations which take effect on March 1, 2026 and will replace the 40-year-old Transfer Act.
His deep regulatory experience positions Shipman & Goodwin to guide clients through these landmark changes and evolving compliance requirements. Stakeholders impacted by the new regulatory framework include industrial and commercial real estate owners, developers, and manufacturers to lenders, healthcare providers, and institutional landowners.
Commenting on the news Brendan said, “This is an exciting time to be joining Shipman & Goodwin. The Environmental Practice Group is top ranked and is well-known for being ahead of the curve on evolving environmental legal developments. I have had the pleasure of collaborating with skilled and knowledgeable lawyers at the firm while at DEEP and look forward to providing counsel about the new release-based cleanup program. Together we will help clients navigate the complexities of these statutory and regulatory reforms.”
